Synopsis

This 6 point unit investigates approaches to integrating the primary school curriculum, emphasizing a shift away from individual representations of the curriculum to a socio-environmental perspective. The unit highlights subject specific pedagogical practices, in particular those within Health and Physical Education, Science and Technology, and the Expressive Arts. The process of curriculum construction and design is examined through a variety of lenses, with an emphasis on the teaching and learning opportunities created by classroom materials and environments.

Objectives

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • Use critical and reflective thinking skills in the analysis of the primary school curriculum across a variety of contexts, including theories of curriculum construction
  • Identify and apply unique approaches to teaching, within an integrated primary school curriculum, drawn from topics within Health and Physical Education, Science and Technology, and the Expressive Arts
  • Identify and utilize the ways in which children's development, classroom materials, and the wider learning environment create opportunities for diversity in teaching and learning.

Assessment

Assignment 1: Tutorial presentation (1000 word equivalent) 25%
Assignment 2: Students will report on an integrated primary school unit of work (3000 word equivalent) 75%
