Synopsis

This unit inquires into the relationships between experience and education in physical activity and outdoor contexts. It synthesises and builds on the units that students study in the first two years of the degree. The backdrop for this unit is the philosophies and theories underpinning experiential education and their relationship to practice in sporting and outdoor contexts. Students will develop their understanding and skills of experiential education through practical experiences.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to;

  1. Articulate their philosophy and approach to experiential education in a sporting or outdoor context.
  2. Interpret and critically assess a range of experiential education theories and approaches
  3. Demonstrate the ability to plan and facilitate an experiential learning activity
  4. Reflect critically on their own practice of experiential education.

Assessment

Assessment task 1: Scholarly essay (2000 words equivalent): 50%; Assessment task 2: Practical reflections (2000 words equivalent) Note: Field day experiences are required to consolidate and extend learning in lectures, tutorials and readings. Satisfactory participation in tutorials and fieldwork is a hurdle requirement for this unit.
