Synopsis

An introduction to employee relations at the workplace level focusing on workplace reform. Topics include the contract of employment; enterprise bargaining; workplace management and union structures; traditional management style and strategies, management strategies; employee participation; best practice; skill formation; and core/peripheral employment patterns; the external context of employee relations.

Objectives

The learning goals associated with this unit are to:

  • examine the changing nature of work and employment in an international context
  • identify and assess theoretical approaches that explain changes in work and employment
  • understand the political economy in which the organisation and management of work takes place
  • identify different forms of employee voice and participation and assess their effectiveness
  • identify and analyse the employee relations challenges facing managers and other professionals in the workplace.

Assessment

Within semester assessment: 40%
Examination (3 hours): 60%
