ATM2030 - Clouds, weather and forecasting6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSLUndergraduate Faculty of ScienceLeader: Dr Steven Siems (School of Mathematical Sciences)OfferedClayton Second semester 2008 (Day) SynopsisThis unit examines cloud processes, the dynamics and prediction of severe storms (including tornadoes and tropical cyclones), the structure and evolution of extra-tropical cyclones and their associated fronts, and the techniques used in forecasting the day-to-day weather. ObjectivesOn completion of ATM2030 students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of: how clouds form and their role in the weather and climate; the dynamics of severe storms, including supercells, tornadoes and tropical cyclones; the structure and evolution of extratropical cyclones and their associated fronts; moist thermodynamics with particular emphasis on forecasting moist convection; how mathematics and atmospheric physics are used to forecast the day-to-day weather, and the inherent limitations in predictability. Students will also have further developed skills in: mathematical modelling and computation; problem solving in a real-life context; scientific communication; and an awareness of the relevance of science to modern society.
