Graduate Diploma in Medical UltrasoundCourse code: 3402 ~ Course abbreviation: GradDipMedUS ~ Total credit points required: 48 ~ 4 semesters part-time ~ Managing faculty: Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Study mode and course locationOff-campus (Clayton - P/T only) Course descriptionThis course, offered by the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences, is directed towards radiographers or other suitably qualified health care professionals who wish to develop proficiency in the provision of medical ultrasound. The course is accredited by the Australasian Sonographers Accreditation Registry. Course objectivesA graduate from the Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following: the scientific concepts underpinning ultrasound modes; the potential biological consequences of ultrasound, sonographic and optimisation of instrumentation and quality assurance; professional ethics, guidelines and standards for the conduct of clinical ultrasound, medico-legal issues, patient care, infection control and professional communication; biopsy techniques; as well as being able to select the optimum sonographic imaging system, transducers and technical factors and implement the required scanning methods; critically evaluate sonographic scan appearances and images; perform abdomen, reproductive system, musculoskeletal system, thyroid, obstetrics, neonatal, paediatric and vascular region sonographic examinations; and assume the role of an accredited sonographer.
