SON4022 - Sonographic imaging of the reproductive system

Synopsis

The unit addresses sonographic scanning methods, techniques and standard protocols related to examinations of the female pelvis, the scrotum and its contents. The unit is intended to equip students with the interpretational skills in respect to the recognition of the sonographic appearances of normal anatomy, anatomical variants and disease processes associated with the female pelvis, the scrotum and its contents. Students will also develop an appreciation of when to modify standard approaches with regard to the clinical question and patient presentation and recognise the limitations of ultrasound in relation to other medical imaging and laparoscopic examinations of the reproductive system will be examined. The unit will introduce students to the use of ultrasound techniques in respect to the evaluation of the prostate and penis with an emphasis upon the selection of appropriate imaging modes.

Objectives

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

1. describe and justify the selection of imaging parameters, equipment and transducers, infection control measures and consent protocols for sonographic examinations of the female pelvis, the scrotum and its contents, the prostrate and penis;
2. perform routine transabdominal and transvaginal scanning of the female pelvis and routine sonographic examinations of the scrotum to a standard and ethical conduct expected of a sonographer of an intermediate beginner level or higher;
3. describe and recognise the normal and abnormal sonographic appearances of the male and female reproductive systems and related artefacts;
4. appreciate the need to adapt and modify standard imaging protocols when dictated by the clinical condition of the patient;
5. use Spectral, Colour and Power Doppler techniques where appropriate;
6. demonstrate an understanding of the limitations of ultrasound in relation to the diagnosis of pathology fo the male and female pelvis;
7. describe and apply quality assurance principles to sonographic imaging of the reproductive system.

Assessment

Compulsory attainment of a requisite number of obstetric sonographic examinations
Two case based minor assignments: 20%
Written examination (2 hours): 40%
Image recognition examination (1 hour): 20%
Clinical skills assessment: 20% or Evidence Based Clinical Practice Assignment: 20%

Off Campus Attendance Requirements

Recommended attendance at a one day workshop at the Clayton campus
