Course description

The course will permit mature students to select units which suit their personal and professional needs as they develop from time to time and in so doing to accumulate credit towards awards on a flexible timetable. Single-unit enrolment is provided for and credit will be given for appropriate work experience.

The course provides a mix of units permitting students to develop an understanding of the interaction of the various layers of modern telecommunication systems. All units in the course use case studies and exercises to build understanding of the concepts and theoretical principles. The project or minor thesis will draw upon a number of subjects to gain understanding of telecommunication systems as a whole. In particular, they will develop an understanding of specification, selection, performance, commissioning and operation of telecommunication systems.

Articulation and credit

Credit is available to candidates who transfer from the postgraduate diploma to the masters without graduating at diploma level. Articulation is subject to approval upon satisfactory academic performance.

Course objectives

The principal aim of the course is to enable currently practising engineers and scientists to upgrade their professional qualifications in response to rapid changes in telecommunications and associated computer technology. It is also intended to permit recent graduates, usually from other universities, to enhance their first qualification with studies in telecommunications engineering to improve their prospects in this area of sustained employment growth. Graduates will develop self study techniques and a framework for continuing professional development.

Course structure

Course requirements

This program course normally consists of:

a.) 48 points of coursework units only, however with the approval of the course director, students may undertake either:

b.) 36 points of coursework units and a 12 point Telecommunication engineering project, or

c.) 24 points of coursework units and a 24 point Telecommunication engineering thesis which will be assessed by two internal examiners (this option is intended for candidates intending to proceed to doctoral studies).

In the case of those taking options a.) or b.) up to 12 points may be drawn from any postgraduate program of the university, with prior approval of the course director.
