Graduate Diploma in Information Management and SystemsCourse code: 2420 ~ Course abbreviation: GradDipIMS ~ Total credit points required: 48 ~ 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time ~ Managing faculty: Information Technology Study mode and course location*On-campus (Caulfield) * Some units will be offered in off-campus mode Course descriptionThe GradDipIMS course prepares students who have a first qualification in another discipline area, for professional careers in information systems (IS) and information management (IM). The course provides students with understanding of foundation information technology concepts and fundamental IS and IM principles, and develops further knowledge and understanding of one or more specialist areas within the IS and IM fields, including the major theoretical and professional debates in each area. The GradDipIMS is both an entry and exit award for the Master of Information Management and Systems and the Master of Information Management and Systems Professional. Course objectivesThe objectives of the Graduate Diploma in Information Management and Systems are to: provide students with knowledge and understanding of fundamental principles in the disciplinary areas that underpin the information technology field; provide students with knowledge, understanding, and experiences that transcend technologies and are robust over time so that students are well placed to deal with ongoing, rapid changes in the information technology field; develop students' understanding of one or more significant areas of information management and systems to a level of depth and sophistication consistent with senior professional practice; enable students to complement their detailed studies of a significant area of information management and systems with elective study from a wide range of disciplines. Credit for prior studiesStudents who have completed a graduate qualification with a recognised specialisation in information systems or information management may be granted credit. A maximum of 24 points of credit is available. Students who have been granted credit must still meet the specialisation and foundation unit requirements in order to complete the course. Course structureCourse requirementsTo qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Information Management and Systems, students must complete 48 points of graduate-level units, of which 36 points must be selected from the MIMS program units listed below. Up to two units (12 points) may be units offered by any school within the university (including the Faculty of Information Technology), subject to approval by the course director. Students without appropriate background knowledge will be required to satisfactorily complete a selection of the foundation units (9000 level) before proceeding to other graduate units (5000 level). The foundation units have been designed for students with little prior study in information technology. Note: It is highly recommended that students undertake postgraduate orientation activities and workshops coordinated by the Faculty of Information Technology.

Exit awardStudents wishing to exit the Graduate Diploma of Information Management and Systems early may apply to graduate with the Graduate Certificate in Information Management and Systems after successful completion of 24 points of study from the information management and systems graduate stream. Professional recognitionThis course is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) as meeting the standard of knowledge for associate-level membership.
