Students will graduate with a full welfare qualification, recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers, plus a major and minor study in other disciplines. Course objectivesThe course provides students with a combination generalist/specialist degree incorporating specific vocational education. Course structureAreas of study Majors and minors can be taken in Australian Indigenous studies, Australian studies (minor only), communications, community studies (minor only), English (minor only), history-politics, journalism, philosophy, psychological studies, psychology, public relations (minor only), sociology or writing. Course requirementsStudents must complete the following: (a) the prescribed sequence in social and community welfare (84 points):
*These units can only be undertaken at either level two or level three, ie students cannot study both SCW2310 and SCW3310. (b) two compulsory supporting units (12 points) - chosen from either PSS1711 (Exploring human behaviour)** or PSS1712 (Behaviour across the lifespan)** and either SCY1801 (Sociological reflections on everyday life) or SCY1802 (Global sociology). (c) an arts major (48 points) (d) an arts minor (24 points) (e) a further 24 points of arts (f) a minimum of 36 points at third-year level. Note that students have a maximum of 10 years to complete this course. ** The psychological studies units are provided to give an introduction to understanding our behaviour, which is particularly tailored to those students intending to proceed in the social community field. Students may choose to replace the psychological studies units with psychology units PSY1011 and PSY1022.
