MUS4200 - Keyboard Music

12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSL

Undergraduate Faculty of Arts

Leader: Carol Williams

Not offered in 2007

The unit surveys the history of keyboard instruments from the earliest hydraulic organ to the latest electronic reconstruction. In terms of repertoire, the 'peak' pieces will be examined against the background of styles and forms of lesser-known works. The relationship between origin and function is a topic of particular interest, since keyboard music in its earliest expressions either provided "intabulations" of vocal music or served as dance music.

On successful conclusion of the unit, students should have had practice in recognising keyboard styles by ear and eye and should be able to locate them on a chronology of broader artistic styles.
