The art and design component of the course is offered on the Caulfield campus. Course objectivesThe aim of this program is to enable creative students to pursue their interests in both engineering design and industrial design, with a focus on high-technology consumer product design. Graduates will be well equipped to synthesise advanced technology and consumer product design in the creation of new manufactured artefacts and will be able to facilitate cooperation in new product development teams by being sensitive to the different professional viewpoints of the team members. Course structureThe large majority of students entering the faculty have completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), and references in the following paragraphs are to the prerequisite VCE subjects. Some domestic and international students enter the faculty with equivalent qualifications, and advice about unit choice for students with qualifications other than the VCE may be obtained from the faculty administration offices. Foundation units are required for students who have not completed appropriate VCE studies. Level 2 units from the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) program are taken during levels 2 and 3 of the double-degree. The order in which they should be taken is determined by prerequisite requirements and the opportunities presented by the timetables at Clayton and Caulfield. The lists outlined in the course map for this program are recommendations, but students should adjust the programs for levels 2 and 3 to suit their own needs. It may not be possible to complete all level 3 units from the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) program by the end of level 4 of the program so one or two level 3 units will be taken at level 5. The selection of the level 4 unit(s) will be determined by timetable restrictions at level 4, and the need to complete any level 4 prerequisite units. Should a student discontinue the double-degree program and seek to take out a single degree, it will be necessary to complete all of the requirements of that single degree. Course requirementsStudents require a total of 240 points, comprising 150 points of engineering units and 90 points of art and design units. This was a new course structure for students entering level 1 of the program from 2005 onwards. Level 4 units from the engineering component of the program will be offered from 2008. Students who entered level 2 of the program prior to 2005 should refer to the handbook for the level in which they commenced the course. Level 1
