It explores the practical operations of mass communications technologies as well as their social and cultural aspects. Students can select a second major from any of the offered disciplines, including advertising, journalism, multimedia, public relations or tourism. Course objectivesThe structured nature of the program gives students the option of undertaking a second major to help prepare them for specific vocational opportunities in addition to the skills obtained through the more general learning and teaching objectives of their studies in the humanities and social sciences. Course structureAreas of studyArts sequences offered at Berwick include behavioural studies, Indonesian, international studies, journalism, psychology and visual culture. Alternatively, students select a sequence of arts units taught at one of the other campuses of the university. Students who opt for this alternative should note that it will involve travelling to another campus to attend lectures, and close attention will need to be paid to the lecture timetable. Course requirementsStudents must complete the following: (a) a major in communications (48 points) (b) a first-year sequence in visual culture – FTV1010 (Contemporary television studies) and FTV1050 (Contemporary film studies) (c) a minor in an arts discipline (24 points) (d) a minimum of 36 points at a third-year level (across the duration of the degree) (e) a total of 84 points from arts. Note that no more than 10 units (60 points) are to be completed at a first-year level. Students have a maximum of eight years to complete this course.
