Course description

The course provides a multidisciplinary design education. Its focus is on the fundamental principles that underlie all designer activities. The design studio units are supported by electives selected from interior architecture, industrial design, visual communications and the specialisations within these disciplines such as photomedia, digital imaging, typography, illustration etc.

The course is focused on producing graduates who have the capability to work across conventional design and industry boundaries and who are capable of responding flexibly and creatively to the changing commercial and cultural context of design activity.

Course objectives

To educate graduates who have:

  • a knowledge and understanding of the design disciplines
  • skills in design strategy, concept forming, problem solving, design development, detailing and communication
  • understanding of the socio-economic and cultural contexts of design activity and the ethical responsibilities of the designer
  • the capability to practice as a designer
  • knowledge and understanding of the aesthetic aspects of design and a capability at aesthetic resolutions
  • a basic knowledge and understanding of the range of design activities and their interrelation
  • knowledge of project and business management
  • the capability to critically assess and understand contemporary discourse on design.

Course structure

This course consists of the following areas of study:

(a) Design studios (48 points)

This is the major study of the course. There are studios at each year stage.

(b) Complementary studio units (12 points)

Students take ‘Typography’ (6 points) and ‘Modelmaking and workshop practice 1’ (6 points) as compulsory units to support their studio activities.

(c) Theory of art and design (30 points)

Students study the theory, context and cultural aspects of art and design.

(d) Drawing and visual structures (12 points)

These studies are concerned with the development of perception, communication and visual concepts primarily using drawing media.

(e) Digital imaging (12 points)

Students take the faculty’s common unit ‘Digital processes for art and design 1’ and a further digital imaging elective in second year. All students may take further computing and digital imaging electives selected on the basis of their design focus.

(f) Electives (30 points)

Students take electives selected from the range of units offered within the faculty and university. Electives should be determined in consultation with the course coordinator.

(g) Occupational Health and Safety (0 points)

A compulsory health and safety unit which deals with issues relevant to art and design.
