Units indexed by faculty Graduate Diploma of Nursing (Gerontics)Course code: 1754 + Course abbreviation: GradDipNurs(Ger) + Total credit points required: 48 + 4 semesters part-time Study mode and course locationOff-campus (Gippsland; Peninsula – P/T only) Course descriptionThis course offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery aims to prepare students to practise as advanced care practitioners in aged care, be able to demonstrate an ability to apply advanced problem-solving skills to patient care, and be equipped to respond to the health care needs of older persons in increasingly diverse and complex health care environments. Course objectivesOn successful completion of the course, students are expected to be able to: 1. clearly identify the role of the nurse in caring for the older adult; 2. appreciate current research into older adult nursing; 3. appreciate social policy as it is applied to older adult nursing care issues and the provision of nursing services; 4. demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the ageing process; 5. undertake comprehensive individual assessment which identifies obstacles to health and independent living and strategies to overcome or cope with them; 6. discuss common nursing problems of the gerontic client and demonstrate an awareness of strategies to overcome them; 7. demonstrate a knowledge of the nature, processes and evaluation of specialty practice in clinical environments such as acute care, rehabilitation, community, residential aged care or palliative care for the older adult; 8. effectively as a health educator and resource person to individuals, families and communities; and 9. act as a catalyst for change and innovation in older adult nursing.
