Units indexed by faculty Graduate Diploma of Nursing (Emergency)Course code: 1626 + Course abbreviation: GradDipNurs(Emerg) + Total credit points required:48 + 2 semesters full-time, 4 semesters part-time Study mode and course locationOn-campus (Gippsland; Peninsula) Course descriptionThis course, offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery, is designed to prepare specialist clinical nurses who are able to provide comprehensive care for the patient in the emergency setting. An extensive and diverse range of clinical experience is offered, incorporating patients of varying ages and level of acuity. Students must engage in a minimum of three days per week paid employment in an emergency department during the first 12 months of the course. Course objectivesUpon completion of all course requirements, it is expected that graduates will: 1. demonstrate competency in the performance of complex clinical skills within the emergency care environment; 2. evaluate nursing practice in relationship to how patients enter the health care system; 3. explore complex and life threatening health breakdowns and their nursing implications; 4. pursue problem solving methods for individual nursing decision making interventions and evaluations; 5. use research methods for improving nursing practice and patient outcomes; 6. examine a range of professional issues relating to current and future emergency nursing practice; and 7. reflect on the emergency care ethos as it relates to nursing individuals in a range of environments from the highly technological to home. Course structureStudents will be required to undertake one 12-point core unit, one 9-point core unit and one 3-point unit. In addition, students will be required to take a further 24 points of elective units. Core units
Elective unitsA further 24 points of elective units may be selected from units within other postgraduate nursing courses, to be negotiated with the course coordinator. AssessmentAssessment includes case study reports, tests, online tutorial discussion groups, clinical skills, exams, clinical performance, advanced life support assessment, learning package and assignments.
