Course description

This course, offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery, is designed to respond to the need within industry for specialist nurses who are able to care for the ill child and family. An extensive and diverse range of clinical experience is offered, incorporating children of varying age, with a wide range of health care needs and levels of acuity, within the hospital and the community. Course units are scheduled in a manner that enables students to undertake part-time employment.

Course objectives

On completion of the course it is expected that graduates will: 1. possess advanced practice skills enabling them to plan, implement and evaluate complex care for children and families; 2. establish caring relationships which reflect a family centred philosophy; 3. utilise research to improve nursing practice and client outcomes; 4. act as professional role models and mentors for less experienced colleagues; 5. critically reflect on their own practice in order to maintain high standards of care and identify ongoing professional development needs; and 6. evaluate a range of professional and health care issues, and formulate appropriate strategies that promote the development of nursing practice involving children and families.

Course structure

Students are required to undertake

  • NUR6405 Explorations in child and family nursing (core unit)
  • study modules offered by industry partners and elective units negotiated with the course coordinator and as approved by the school

Assessment

Assessment includes clinical performance, case studies, written assignments, completion of learning packages and examinations.
