Course description

This course, offered by the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, provides a program for professionals in the workplace who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in preventive occupational health practice. It provides the basic knowledge in legal occupational health and safety requirements and competence in assessing and controlling workplace hazards and articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Occupational and Environmental Health and then the Master of Occupational and Environmental Health or can lead to the Master of Public Health. Students must complete compulsory block requirements each semester.

Course objectives

On completion of this course graduates should be able to: 1. Identify the legal requirements of occupational health practice; 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of recognition, assessment and control of workplace hazards; 3. Demonstrate use of monitoring equipment, and interpret results of such testing used to measure the level of hazards in the workplace; 4. Assess the risks to health of common chemical, physical, biological and psychosocial hazards in the workplace; 5. Advise on specific measures and management programs to control these hazards in the workplace.

Course structure

Students are required to complete four core units:

  • MPH2022 Assessment and control of workplace hazards
  • MPH2041 Occupational health and safety management
  • MPH2043 Chemical and biological hazards
  • MPH2044 Ergonomic and physical hazards

Assessment

Assessment includes web-based tasks, written assignments and examinations.
