Synopsis

Prevention of human disease resulting from workplace exposures to chemical and biological hazards. Covering toxicological principles, health effects of the major groups of chemical substances, as well as biological hazards such as blood borne diseases and legionnaires disease.

Objectives

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. describe the effects of commonly encountered groups of substances;
  2. describe the common chemical causes of occupational and environmental disease;
  3. discuss the concepts of environmental illness and multiple chemical exposure measurements;
  4. conduct simple measurements and evaluate the results of chemical exposure measurements;
  5. evaluate and recommend protective measures for chemical exposures.

Written assignments 50%
