Course description

This course, offered by the Centre for Medical and Health Sciences Education, enables teachers from the health professions to develop their teaching and supervision skills, course development techniques and expand their working knowledge of educational theory to underpin future practice. Participants will be expected to explore and evaluate the impact of new educational methods (including assessment and evaluation methods) and legislation on the provision of high-quality education in the health environment. They will be introduced to the design and implementation of effective educational research and program evaluation.

Course objectives

On completion of the course clinical and biomedical science graduates should be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge with respect to the theoretical underpinning of learning, teaching and assessment and evaluation of educational programs; 2. Demonstrate an appreciation of methods used in medical education research and the role of application of evidence to the effectiveness of educational interventions; 3. To understand ethical and legal responsibilities of teaching in the clinical and biomedical sciences; 4. Demonstrate positive attitudes and skills in relation to learning teaching and assessment; 5. Competently use a range of teaching resources and communication technologies; 6. Design and apply assessment strategies for students in a medical or other health science environment; 7. Effectively evaluate their and other’s teaching; and 8. Design and implement a teaching/supervision program for medical and other health science undergraduates and graduates.

Course structure

Students must complete the following core units:

  • MEU0001 Teaching and learning in health professional education
  • MEU0002 Developing clinical teaching and supervision
  • MEU0003 Assessment and evaluation in health professional education
  • MEU0004 Best evidence in health professional education (on-campus and off-campus)

Assessment

Assessment includes written assignments, teaching practicals and preparation of a structured teaching portfolio.
