Units indexed by faculty Graduate Certificate in Health InformaticsCourse code: 2255 + Course abbreviation: GradCertHealthInfo + Total credit points required: 24 + 1 semester full-time, 2 semesters part-time Study mode and course locationOff-campus (Clayton) Course descriptionThis course, offered by the Monash Institute of Health Services Research, caters for professionals qualified to be involved in the identification, planning, implementation and use of computer-based information systems in all areas of the health care industry, including hospitals and government bodies The course will explore techniques for assessing current information practices, determining the information needs of health care providers and patients, developing interventions using information technology and evaluating the impacts of those interventions. Course objectivesThis course aims to provide students with: 1. An understanding of the various types of information systems used in healthcare contexts; An awareness of the role of hardware and software used in healthcare situations; 2. An understanding of the system development life cycle, data and process modelling techniques and the skills to use these in the analyses of healthcare systems; 3. An understanding of the roles of policy formulation and organisational change in the healthcare environment; 4. The understanding and the skills required to develop healthcare related databases; 5. An appreciation of situations where new technologies can be effectively utilised; and 6. The skills to evaluate health information systems successfully.
