Course description

This course, offered by the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, targets the needs of health personnel and those in the pharmaceutical industry, who need to design, execute and evaluate clinical trials. It provides the core competencies in epidemiology, biostatistics and clinical trials issues and articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology and then the Master of Clinical Epidemiology or can lead to the Master of Public Health.

Course objectives

On completion of this course, graduates should be able to: 1. Demonstrate an appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of different epidemiological study designs; 2. Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts and methods of biostatistics; 3. Use epidemiological and biostatistical principles to critically evaluate epidemiological research; 4. Identify the features of different clinical trial designs and understand their purpose; 5. Evaluate the different trial designs; 6. Demonstrate an understanding of the ethics of clinical trials; and 7. Demonstrate the skills in critical appraisal of a clinical trial.

The course comprises four core units.

First semester

  • MPH2036 Controlled clinical trials
  • MPH2037 Measurement in clinical research

Assessment

Assessment includes written assignments, examinations and individual presentations.
