Course description

This course, offered by the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, provides a broad understanding of the value and basic principles of biostatistical methods in health and medical research. The degree assists in understanding the principles of epidemiology and its biostatistical underpinnings and practical application as well as improving computing and data management skills. The course articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Biostatistics and then the Master of Biostatistics.

Course objectives

On completion of this course, students will be expected to: 1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the value and basic principles of biostatistical methods in health and medical research; 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of epidemiology and its biostatistical underpinnings; 3. Have acquired skills in data management and statistical analyses to handle a variety of practical problems using modern statistical techniques and software; and 4. Have developed the practical and technical skills to progress to further postgraduate studies in biostatistics.

Assessment

Assessment includes written assignments, practical exercises and examinations.
