Course description

This course is designed for teachers, educational administrators, and other health and human resource professionals who wish to continue postgraduate studies in inclusive and special education and to further assist them in understanding the processes of teaching and learning in both settings.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must hold either:

  • an approved three-year bachelors degree in a relevant field with a credit average in the final year, or
  • an approved three-year bachelors degree (or equivalent) and a fourth year of study, or
  • an approved four-year bachelors degree, or
  • qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Course structure

The course consists of 48 points of study. Specialist cohort students follow the program outlined below*. All other students will complete the following three core 12-point units plus one elective:

Core units

  • EDF6601 Studies in special education/inclusion
  • EDF6602 Evidence-informed inclusive and special education practice 1
  • EDF6614 Inclusive and special education practice 2, plus

Elective

An appropriate 12-point research unit to be selected from the faculty suite of research methodology units listed below (taken on advice from the course coordinator or supervisor), or any other one postgraduate unit.

  • EDF6005 Reading, interpreting and communicating research (12 points)
  • EDF6006 Survey approaches to research (12 points)
  • EDF6007 Qualitative approaches to research (12 points)
  • EDF6008 Working with theory in research (12 points)
  • EDF6009 Special topic in research (12 points)
  • EDF6012 Specific focus in research A (6 points)
  • EDF6013 Specific focus in research B (6 points),

Articulation

Candidates who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma of Education (Inclusive and Special Education) may complete a masters degree by undertaking up to a further two units (including a research core unit).
