Course description

The course is designed to provide rigorous theoretical and practical knowledge in business law and to develop an understanding of and an ability to analyse a wide range of legal problems arising in the practice of business law. The course is of direct relevance to those involved in commerce, either as legal advisers, or in the private, commercial, or government sectors. The course will enhance relevant skills for students seeking placements in legal commercial and governmental regulatory and compliance positions, especially in Australia and Asia.

Credit for prior studies

Candidates may be eligible for credit for a maximum of four credit exemptions for units considered to be equivalent to particular units in the course of study. Credit exemptions are restricted to relevant units completed within the last five years.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete at least four units (24 points) at 5000-level from a range of units offered by the Department of Business Law and Taxation:

Students can choose up to two units from other departments in the Faculty of Business and Economics, or other faculties, of the university.

It is recommended that students consult with the course director to ensure their elective units form a coherent study program.

Students may also undertake, with the approval of the course director, a minor thesis (BTX5490, 24 points) or a research project (BTX5800, 6 points or BTX5900, 12 points).

Students can choose up to four units approved for the Master of Commercial Law offered by the Faculty of Law, provided the course director is satisfied that every unit so chosen does not substantially duplicate a subject previously completed by the candidate.
