Synopsis: Skills and techniques needed for consecutive interpreting such as techniques for note-taking, sight translation, interpreting numbers, interview interpreting and speech interpreting. Topics focus on industry, business, politics, general contemporary affairs, education, medicine, tourism, government institutions etc. Fifth-year students are expected to provide English-LOTE, LOTE-English consecutive interpreting with competency applicable to the workplace and equivalent to that expected the professional level of consecutive interpreting.

Objectives: At the completion of this subject, students should 1. have gained theoretical knowledge of the various facets of interpreting and an insight into the practical aspects of acting as an interpreter in an industry/social environment ; 2. have developed the specific skills needed to provide consecutive interpreting of both dialogue and speech; 3. have refined their understanding of ethics and working environments of different modes of interpreting 4. be able to interpret a three to five minute speech on a topic that is familiar to them at a professional level.

Assessment: One essay (2000 words): 20%, Assignments (4000 words): 30%, End-of-semester test (2000 words): 40% Class performance (1000 words): 10%. Additional comment 1. Class performance points will be awarded on students' attendance rate, classroom participation and the performance at supervised tutoring sessions conducted at computer labs. 2. The weighting of the essay for 5th year students reflects the requirement for a more in-depth theoretical and conceptual discussion of the topic.

Prohibitions: TRN4300 Intermediate Interpreting. TRN4040 Translation: applications of theory.
