Clayton Second semester 2006 (Day)
Synopsis: This unit explores in a practical hands-on way, the problems associated with designing, constructing, testing and programming as well fault finding a small embedded microcontroller system. This unit concentrates on developing hand skills as well as fault finding techniques and programming in a C environment with the students actually constructing the microcontroller system they are investigating. This unit is presented in a manner which does not require prior knowledge of microcontrollers. An understanding of basic circuit theory is recommended as well as knowledge of the C programming language.
Objectives: To explore and develop a practical working knowledge of how to design, construct and program a small embedded microcontroller application using modern CAD tools for schematic capture and printed circuit board layout. To develop practical skills in fault finding, testing and debugging a small microcontroller system. To examine the requirements for developing a microcontroller system for industrial applications, including Health and Safety issues, power consumption, environmental protection and reliability.
Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 70% + Laboratory and assignment work: 30%. Student must achieve a mark of 45% in each component to achieve an overall pass grade
Contact Hours: 2 hours of lectures, 4 hours of laboratory and practice classes and 6 hours of private study per week
