Synopsis: The social bases of working life. An historical overview of the meaning of work will include cultural, religious, economic and psychological attitudes and explanations of the importance of work. Particular emphasis will be placed on labour process theory and recent changes in the organisation of work, including part-time, casual and 'invisible' employment. Globalisation and the international division of labour.
Assessment: Research report (2500 words): 50% + Examination (2 hours): 50% + Third-year students will be required to show a greater depth of critical analysis of arguments and issues than is expected of those writing their essays at second-year level.
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour seminar) per week
