The Family Centred Worker in Context ( 12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSL)

Undergraduate
(ARTS)

Leader: Margaret Lynn and Barbara Fraser

Offered:
Gippsland First semester 2006 (OCL)

Synopsis: The unit continues an examination of the central ideas and skills shaping family centred practice, the individual within family, group, community and society; and the orientation of thinking in terms of relationships, context and use of language. It introduces students to the knowledge, skills and values of the therapeutic relationship. The conceptual and professional origins of the use of self as part of building a working alliance in family centred practice are identified and critically evaluated, particularly from gender and cultural perspectives. Contemporary developments in theory and practice are also studied and critiqued.

Objectives: On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to; 1. Use professional knowledge in their practice, to understand "alliance building skills"; integrate theory as a basis for practice using personal experience of family systems; 2. Develop capacity for differentiation and neutrality, and increase understanding about family of origin; demonstrate professional skills at a beginning level of competence in developing a change- and resilience-focus with families; 3. Identify and apply professional values of family resilience as a socio-economic process, and the differential use of self in the expanded therapeutic alliance in family-centred practice.
