Peninsula Summer 2006 (Day)
Synopsis: This is a bridging unit designed to expand student knowledge and skills, particularly in the themes of Foundations of Knowledge in Health Sciences, Applied Practice and Research. Upon satisfactory completion, graduates of the Diploma of Health Sciences (Physiotherapy stream) 2005 will enter into the second year of the Bachelor of Physiotherapy.
Objectives: By the completion of this unit, it is expected that the student will be able to: 1. describe the basic development and detail the structure of the pelvis and lower limba nd upper limb; 2. describe the biomechanics and kinesiology of the pelvis and lower limb and upper limb; 3. take a patient history and perform physical examination of the pelvis and lower limb and upper limb; 4. apply physiotherapy techniques to the pelvis and the lower limb and upper limb, including massage, taping, splinting and exercise prescription, in safe and effective manner; 5. modify and progress physiotherapy techniques according to outcome achieved; 6. apply the principles of manual handling and risk minimisation to oneself and to the simulated client during scenario based interactions; 7. apply the principles of biomechanics to the management of lower limb conditions; 8. apply first aid techniques at a level 1 standard; 9. interpret basic radiographs of the pelvis and lower limb and upper limb; 10. perform basic gait assessment; 11. position oneself safely and practice in accordance with the Workcover Manual Handling legislation; 12. assess the environment for any risks to personal and client safety; and 13. identify the professionals who make up the health care team and describe their roles and responsibilities.
Assessment: Formative assessment include skills mastery checklist and written examination. Students must attend 100% of the bridging unit.
Prerequisites: Completion of Diploma of Health Sciences (Physiotherapy stream)
