Synopsis: This unit is offered as two modules covering the Growing Child and Family and Child Health Crisis. The unit covers perspectives on the physical, cognitive and social growth and development of the child in the context of the evolving family unit. Family life, role relationships, parenting and other family issues and their impact on the development and health of the child and family members. Framework and skills for health assessment of the child and family. The roles of health professionals in the promotion of child and family health.

Objectives: On completion of this unit students should be able to: a. evaluate the physical and developmental level of a child; b. appraise family dynamics as they influence the health and well being of a child; c. value the importance of a family centred approach when caring for children; d. assess the impact that a health crisis has on the patient and family; e. consistently acts in a manner which encompasses a patient/family centred philosophy; f. identifies the need for, and delivers appropriate nursing interventions which support the basic needs and comfort of the patient and family with a health crisis; and g. develop critical thinking in relation to the philosophical and theoretical underpinning of child and family health (level five students).

Assessment: Growth and Development Portfolio - 4-5000 words.(40%)+ Case study - 4-5000 words (40%) + Reflective Essays - 2000 words(20%)
