Synopsis: The management and coordination of nursing care for the client/patient attending a general practice is an important aspect of general practice nursing. The unit focuses on the principles and practices necessary to provide nursing care and management to clients/patients experiencing acute and chronic ill health. The student must develop an understanding of, and clinical proficiency in, the therapeutic interventions and management skills essential in caring for these clients/patients within general practice.
Objectives: On completion of this unit, and with further study, the student is expected to be able to: 1. Describe the historical development of the practice nurse and analyse emerging roles. 2. Discuss and analyse the recognition and management of clients with chronic health conditions and the role of the practice nurse in chronic care clinics within general practice. 3. Critique the management and monitoring of infection control and stock management issues relevant to general practice. 4. Discuss and analyse the structural and personal factors involved in managing change. 5. Identify and explore areas of nursing research that are useful to, and achievable in, general practice. 6. Outline and analyse the practice nurse's integrating role in drawing up a Care Plan of a patient with complex biopsychosocial needs. 7. Demonstrate and explain the nursing skills involved in patient/client management in the general practice setting.
Assessment: Case study 1 (2,000 words) (35%), Case study 2 (3,000 words) (50%), On-line quiz (15%), Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) (Pass/Fail).
Prerequisites: Bachelor of Nursing (or equivalent) and 12 months post registration. Access to a general practice environment.
