Offered:
Clayton First semester 2006 (Day)
Clayton Second semester 2006 (Day)
Synopsis: The major part of this unit is a reverse engineering materials identification project. Students also produce an engineering drawing of a component and critically analyse the design. A considered estimate of the cost of manufacture of the component is to be made. Students attend a workshop practice session, to experience some hands-on metal working processes involving the basic operations of milling and turning. Lectures on the sources of error in experimentation will be held, the topics including the elements of basic statistics.
Objectives: The objectives of the unit are to develop: 1. The ability to identify, using basic techniques, the material used in a component obtained from an engineering product 2. The effective use of a library to obtain information needed for the self-directed learning program. 3. The ability to present the results obtained in the laboratory and library in a well-organised report 4. A simple appreciation of the uses and conventions of engineering drawing 5. Some knowledge of costing 6. A confidence and self-reliance on the ability to solve problems 7. An appreciation of the diverse materials and methods used in the manufacture of engineering components 8. Knowledge of elementary statistics for data analysis.
Assessment: Final report: 40% + Oral report: 5% + Test:15% + Assignments: 20% + Workshop: 5% + Laboratory records: 5%
Contact Hours: 20 lecture/practice classes, 12 x 3hr laboratory experiments
