Synopsis: This unit is designed to provide students with practical skills in the area of data management from collection of date up to the point of final analysis of these data. Using the Good Clinical Research Practices guidelines as they apply to data management, the course focuses on the essential skills and minimum standards of data management. The unit is practically oriented in that after some introductory classes, each week a topic is introduced which is then reinforced with practical exercises that builds on the skills learnt in previous weeks. The class is given a 'real world' clinical research scenario that will be used as the basis for these exercises.
Objectives: On completion of this unit students will: 1. understand good practices in data collection and form design; 2. be skilled in the practical use of databases and statistical packages; 3. understand techniques in ensuring quality control of data; 4. understand data storage, backup and archiving procedures; 5. understand concepts of data confidentiality, access and security.
