MMS-ALFRED Second semester 2006 (Day)
Synopsis: Develops knowledge base and rational processes required for risk decision making and risk management in the health arena. Topics includes: examination of risk assessment outcomes in different circumstances; risk management strategies using illustrative case studies in food, water and environmental safety; the principles and science of good risk management; overview of different regulatory frameworks; evolution of risk communication and different communication models using case studies.
Objectives: On completion of this subject participants will: 1. understand and apply the process of risk decision-making to a series of case studies relating to current health concerns involving food, water, soil and air; 2. competently evaluate and interpret the scientific literature in relation to health issues and be able to effectively communicate this information to others; 3. show familiarity with the principles and procedures that need to be considered and adopted to ensure the community is adequately informed; and 4. have developed an appreciation that any policies devised to reduce or prevent health risks need to be cost effective.
