Synopsis: This unit focuses on those psychiatric disorders caused by known brain dysfunction or damage as distinct from those that may be due to psychosocial factors or unestablished organic factors. In particular the following areas are covered: delirium, the dementias, sympotomatic psychiatric disorders, focal brain syndromes, medical/neurological disease with associated psychiatric disorder and psychiatric illness in individuals with intellectual disability.

Objectives: On completion of this unit candidates will: 1. appreciate the biological basis of psychiatric illness; 2. be able to demonstrate skills in assessment and investigation of organic psychiatric conditions; 3. be able to display knowledge of the common organic psychiatric conditions, their detection, their different diagnoses and their management.

Assessment: Journal (Pass/Fail) + Case reports (100%)
