Clayton First semester 2006 (Day)
Synopsis: Review of control volume formulation. Introduction to the differential formulation of the equations of continuity, linear momentum and, briefly, energy. The linear momentum equation and its application to fluid mechanics, via Reynold's Transport Theorem leading to the Navier-Stokes equation. Introduction to potential flow leading to vortex theory - aerofoil theory. Boundary equations. A review of thermodynamics leading to compressible flow then on to converging-diverging nozzles, normal and oblique shocks and the effects of friction on compressible flows.
