Synopsis: The seminars will investigate issues concerned with second language acquisition and will enable students to reflect on the experience of acquiring languages from a Comparative perspective.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. Reflect on the experience of acquiring languages from a comparative perspective. 2. Share experiences with students taking other languages/same language/different combinations of languages. 3. Engage in informed discussion on methods and outcomes in second language acquisition. 4. Show familiarity with cultural and social aspects of second language acquisition, multilingualism and contact.

Assessment: Class participation: 30% + Class paper written up as a 3000-word assignment: 70%

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour seminar) per week

Corequisites: Enrolment in BA (Languages) or current enrolment in 3rd year level LOTE study AND additional 12 points in a second LOTE at first year level OR by permission.
