Synopsis: The subject deals with both the theory and practice of negotiation and mediation as problem solving processes. Students are exposed to important communication techniques including interactive listening and effective framing, as well as tools for empathetic understanding and building constructive working relationships. Learning in the subject is highly experiential, with a significant emphasis on interactive exercises and role-plays. It utilises a multi-media format and offers students significant opportunities to develop practical skills in the areas of negotiation and mediation.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of the subject, students should have: (a)an understanding of the concepts of negotiation and mediation; (b)an appreciation of the practical application of both processes; (c) developed effective communication skills; and (d)learned frameworks for personal and commercial problem solving.

Assessment: Preparation for and participation in role play exercises 30% Class test (open book, two and a half hours) 70%
