Synopsis: This unit aims to develop knowledge, strategies and skills needed to interact in Japanese in practical contexts in Australia and Japan and also aims to extend linguistic, sociolinguistic and sociocultural knowledge to develop cross-cultural awareness and facilitate effective interaction.

Objectives: Upon completing Japanese 2, students should: 1. Be able to participate in conversation in defined social situations. 2. Be able to interact with Japanese guests, customers and tourists in a number of settings using simple Japanese. 3. Possess basic 'survival' Japanese required for travelling in Japan. 4. Have a knowledge of the fundamentals of the Japanese writing system, including a knowledge of hiragana, katakana and about 100 kanji, and be able to use this knowledge to read and write in defined contexts. 5. Have a basic knowledge of some aspects of Japanese geography, culture, society, etiquette and tourism. 6. Be able to access the internet to obtain information on Japan and enhance their learning of the Japanese language. 7. Have developed strategies for learning Japanese and have established a foundation for the continued study of both spoken and written Japanese.

Assessment: Written test(s): 50% + Aural/oral tests: 25% + Quizzes and assignments: 25%

Contact Hours: 4 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 3 hours tutorials/seminars) per week

Prerequisites: JLG5010 or its equivalent
