Synopsis: The unit covers the evolution of health promotion and critically examines its inherent values and assumptions. Three main approaches to health promotion (medical, behavioural and socio-environmental), are examined, including their ideological foundations, key strategies, strengths and limitations, and the current evidence-base for their effectiveness. The second part of the unit introduces models of health promotion practice and the key stages involved in planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion programs. Strategies are exposed for integrating health promotion into professional practice and working in partnership with other stakeholders in the health and non-health sector.

Objectives: By the completion of this unit, it is expected that the student will be able to: 1. reflect on the values and assumptions inherent in health promotion - including their own and those of a range of stakeholders; 2. discuss and critically reflect on a range of health promotion theories of change ranging from an individual to population-wide focus; 3. define, compare and contrast medical, behavioural and socio-environmental approaches to health promotion; 4. explain the strengths and limitations of each approach and the strategies used within them; 5. propose strategies for integrating health promotion into a selected area of health and social care practice and across a range of settings; 6. explain the importance of planning in health promotion; 7. identify key stages in health promotion program planning, implementation and evaluation; 8. locate, review and analyse a community-based health promotion program in relation to all stages of a selected planning model; 9. locate key policies and sources of funding for health promotion; and 10. describe the steps involved in writing a basic project proposal and funding application.

Assessment: Group research report: 20% + Essay: 30% + Group researcg and report: 50% + Hurdle requirement: 80% attendance at tutorials
