Synopsis: The unit has an introduction to theoretical perspectives and trends in sociology. It focuses on embodiment and the lived experience of disability, aging and mental health within the social context. Themes include the relevance of gender on health outcomes, and reconstruction of self after a major bodily alteration (accident, illness or disease). Also investigated will be contemporary debates about aging, including human frailty, fear, grief and loss, and subsequent rehabilitation of the self through resilience and adaptation. Postmodern concerns surrounding identity, sexuality and perceptions of disability and risk discourse will be juxtaposed with the chaotic, fragile and fragmented body.

Objectives: By the completion of this unit, it is expected that the student will be able to: 1. apply the principles of sociological theory to the lived experience of the individual; 2. demonstrate a sound understanding of the themes associated with the sociological imagination; 3. apply an awareness of diversity and difference to the study of a range of population cohorts; 4. demonstrate understanding, respect and support for the roles of other professionals involved in health and social care; and 5. describe the sociological of health care as it relates to people who have experienced a major disruption to their own health.

Assessment: Essay (2500 words): 50% + Essay and presentation (1500 words): 50% + Hurdle requirement: 80% attendance at tutorials
