(MED)

Leader: TBA

Offered:
Peninsula First semester 2006 (Day)

Synopsis: This unit builds on earlier units that develop foundation skills in research and an appreciation of the intrinsic value of research to address the question of how research is used to influence conceptual and practical paradigms. Students are introduced to the concept of evidence-based practice (EBP) and consider what counts as evidence and why. The McMaster critique guide is presented as a method of critiquing evidence. The application of EBP in various contexts - including clinical settings, management and policy development and community settings - is explored and the limitations of EBP are considered. The value of systematic reviews and critically appraised topics is discussed.

Objectives: By the completion of this unit, it is expected that the student will be able to 1. explain "evidence-based practice" and discuss its limitations in a variety of practice settings; 2. identify the levels of evidence for EBP and the ways in which evidence is obtained; 3. demonstrate an ability to find evidence; 4. complete a systematic review of evidence on a given topic; and 5. identify gaps in knowledge for a practice-related topic, develop a researchable question and conduct a database search for evidence to support practice in that area.
