Synopsis: This unit will provide students who complete the health sciences/social work stream of the Diploma of Health Sciences in 2005 with supplementary information to facilitate their progress into 2nd year of the Bachelor of Health Sciences/Bachelor of Social Work course in 2006. Content for the unit will be drawn from the new Bachelor of Health Science units and will include basic definitions of health and social care, an introduction to determinants of health, health issues in relation to ageing and ability/disability, research skills and an introduction to health informatics.

Objectives: By the completion of this unit, it is expected that the student will have sufficient supplementary information to facilitate their progress directly into 2nd year of the Bachelor of Health Sciences/Bachelor of Social Work course.

Assessment: Hurdle requirement: attendance at 80% of all classes

Contact Hours: Three week intensive, with 15 contact hours per week (3 hours each day), comprising a combination of lectures and tutorials) and private study.
