Synopsis: In this unit, effective teaching is viewed as a continually evolving practice based on review, reflection, and revision. The varied aspects and conceptions of student assessment are examined in a systematic way. The issue of student diversity is raised and examined for its impact on assessment. The relationship between assessment and student learning and evaluation of teaching is explored within participants' own teaching contexts. Sources of evaluation information and uses of evaluation to review and improve teaching and learning are also investigated.
Objectives: On successful completion of the unit participants are expected to be able to: 1. Use a wide and appropriate range of assessment approaches and methods to support student learning and to record student achievement in their subjects/units; 2. Evaluate their own work with a range of self, peer and student monitoring and evaluation techniques; 3. Provide support to their students in academic matters.
Assessment: First set of written assignments (2000 words) 50% + Second set of written assignment (2000 words) 50%
Contact Hours: Equivalent of 2 hrs per week (face-to-face and on-line)
Prerequisites: First degree or equivalent
Corequisites: Concurrently teaching
