Synopsis: A sociolinguistic perspective on the German language. Issues include language and society, politics and education. The role of the German language in a socioculturally and politically changed Europe, with particular reference to questions of language and national identity, pluricentricity and diglossia, the German language and German unity, migrant German and foreigner German, and the national and international status of the German language.

Assessment: Written (3000 words): 60% + Examination (2 hours): 40%

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week

Corequisites: An advanced German Studies core unit.
