Synopsis: This unit will provide an introduction to the principles and concepts of database systems their organisation and management. The issues of physical and logical data description are addressed. Various data models,and a query language, are introduced. This will include planning, designing, using and implementing a data model using an enterprise-scale relational database system. Methods and techniques will also be presented to populate, retrieve, update and implement integrity features on data in the implemented database system.
Assessment: Assessment will include two practical assignments based on case studies and a three hour exam based on both the theorectical and practical content of the subject.
Contact Hours: 4 hours per week
Prerequisites: GCO2851
Prohibitions: FIT1004, GCO2815, GCO3851, IMS2112, IMS1907. (Computing and IT students may not take this unit.)
