Synopsis: This unit examines the dynamics of 'Asian' (esp. South Asian) identity in the postcolonial era, as revealed in a range of fictional texts. Issues discussed include representational dichotomies and intersections of 'East' and 'West', cultural hybridity, diaspora, and Australian responses to Asia in both literature and the media.
Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 50% + Short essay (1500 words): 30% + Seminar participation: 20%
Contact Hours: 2 hour seminar per week
Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in English or permission
