Synopsis: In this unit there will be an investigation of selected topics from recent research relating to learning music. Students will consider : learning theories and their application to music education; the nature of creativity in music and its educational implications; issues of giftedness and talent in music education; and critiques of recent arguments for transfer effects between music learning and other fields

Objectives: Upon completion of this unit students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of selected issues in recent research in music education; evaluate different theories of learning and their application to music education; review current writings on the nature of creativity and how it informs music education; discuss issues of giftedness and talent in music education; evaluate the arguments in the current debate over the transfer of music learning.

Assessment: Two essays (2 x 4000 words = 8000 words): 50% each
