Clayton Second semester 2006 (Day)
Synopsis: This unit focuses on the practical skills and strategies involved in delivering LOTE programs in the primary school. Topics include strategies for; a) identifying learning needs and individual differences b) teaching literacy and oracy skills, c) developing metalinguistic and intercultural awareness; d) monitoring learners' progress and performance; e) selecting, adapting and creating materials, and designing units of work.
Objectives: As a result of studying this unit students are expected to : identify learners' prior knowledge and learning needs; develop lesson plans with appropriately expressed cognitive, linguistic and cultural objectives; sequence exercises and activities to meet the needs and interests of different student groupings; design and practice a variety of ways of modelling and developing the 4 macro-skills individually and in combination; select, modify and/or create suitable resources; explore various strategies for monitoring and reporting on students' communicative competence; develop teaching materials which draw on different media, integrate linguistic and intercultural knowledge and promote target language use.
Assessment: Assignment (teaching materials): 50% + Successful completion of practicum including teaching folio: 50%
