Synopsis: This unit provides students with an overview of and general rationale for the teaching of a LOTE in primary schools. Topics include government language policy, current research in child second language acquisition/bilingualism, goals and models for teaching LOTE to young children; and factors to consider in establishing a primary LOTE program integrating it within the larger school curriculum..
Objectives: The learning objectives for this unit are to enable students to understand; a) the rationale behind languages programs in primary schools; b) the issues involved in setting up and maintaining such programs; c) the strengths and constraints associated with different program models. On completion of the unit students should be conversant with current language policies, with state-mandated curriculum and assessment frameworks for LOTE teaching and with a range of relevant teaching aproaches and resources. They should have an understanding of key principles and practices conducive to successful second language acquisition and their application to LOTE classes.
Assessment: Two assignments (2500-3000 words in total) 40% each = 80% + Oral presentation 20%.
Contact Hours: 3 hours per week
Prerequisites: A 3 year post Year 12 major in a Language Other Than English at tertiary level or its equivalent
